Both the start and the end date are counted, which is how deadlines are normally quoted.
Contracts, notice periods and delivery promises are almost always written in working days, and working days are the ones that are annoying to count. Weekends drop out, public holidays drop out, and the answer is never the number you get by subtracting the dates.
Count between two dates, or go the other way and add a number of working days to find where the deadline actually falls. Both ends are included, because that is how people mean it when they say ten working days from Monday.
The weekend is yours to define. Most of the world takes Saturday and Sunday, plenty of places do not, and either way you can add the specific public holidays that apply to you rather than trusting a list built for somewhere else.
How working days are counted
In counting mode, every date from the start to the end is checked, both ends included. A day counts if it is not one of the weekend days you selected and is not on your holiday list.
In adding mode, the start date itself is not counted. The calculator steps forward a day at a time and counts only working days until it reaches the number you asked for, so 10 working days from a Thursday lands on the Thursday two weeks later.
A worked example
From Monday 5 October to Friday 30 October 2026 is 26 calendar days and 20 working days. From Monday 2 November to Friday 27 November is also 20 working days, but enter Thanksgiving on the 26th and the day after as holidays and it drops to 18.
Adding 10 working days to Thursday 24 September 2026 gives Thursday 8 October. Count the same range with both ends included and you get 11, because the start day is now in the count. Both answers are right; they answer different questions.
Mistakes that move a deadline
Forgetting public holidays. They are not added automatically, because they differ by country, state and employer. Enter the ones that apply to you.
Assuming every weekend is Saturday and Sunday. Some countries rest on Friday and Saturday, and many shift workers have a different pattern altogether. Select the right days before counting.
Starting the count on the wrong day. If notice is given late in the day, many policies start counting from the next working day. Check the wording, and move the start date if it says so.
Ten working days sounds like plenty until you look at the calendar.

How many working days are between two dates?
Pick both dates and the count appears, alongside the calendar day total and the number of days that were skipped. Both the start and the end date are counted.
How do I work out a deadline in working days?
Switch to the add working days mode, set the start date, and enter the number of days. The result skips weekends and any holidays you have added. Enter a negative number to count backwards from a fixed deadline.
Can I exclude public holidays?
Yes, add each one by date and it is removed from the count. Holidays are entered by hand rather than assumed, because they differ by country and often by region within a country.
Can I change which days are the weekend?
Any combination of days can be marked as non working. Saturday and Sunday are selected to begin with, and a Friday and Saturday weekend or a six day week are both a couple of taps away.
