It is a way of working in fixed intervals: you pick one task, work on it for twenty-five minutes without switching, then take a five minute break. Every fourth round the break is longer, usually fifteen to thirty minutes. Francesco Cirillo worked it out as a student in the late 1980s using a kitchen timer shaped like a tomato, which is where the name comes from. The value is less about the exact numbers and more about the fact that something outside your head is deciding when to stop.

If you already know the ratio you want, there is probably a page set up for it, such as the 52/17 timer for deep work or the 50/10 setup on the coding timer.
