Many employers round timesheets to the nearest quarter hour. Check which rule yours uses before rounding.

Converting minutes by hand means the tracking happened somewhere else.

Usually on paper, or in memory. PomoTodo records the time against the task as you work and reports it in decimal hours already, the conversion step, and the argument about what you actually worked, both disappear.

Free plan tracks unlimited focus time across unlimited tasks. No card required.

Nobody works in decimals. You worked from nine until quarter past five, took forty minutes for lunch, and now a payroll field wants that as a number with a point in it.

The conversion is a division by sixty, which is easy and still gets fumbled, mostly because the answer rarely lands cleanly. Twenty minutes is 0.33 recurring. Fifty is 0.83. Put the wrong one in and the difference shows up in your pay.

Type it above and it converts both directions. If your employer rounds to the quarter hour, set that and see the rounded figure next to the exact one, so you know exactly what you are giving up.

Questions

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. Fifteen minutes is 15 ÷ 60 = 0.25 hours, and 45 minutes is 0.75 hours. The converter above does it as you type, and the chart lower down covers every minute from 1 to 60.

Why does payroll want decimal hours instead of hours and minutes?

Pay is rate multiplied by hours, and that multiplication only works on a decimal number. Entering 7:30 into a payroll field would be read as seven and a half thousand, so timesheets ask for 7.5 instead.

What is 30 minutes in decimal?

0.5 hours. Twenty minutes is 0.33, forty minutes is 0.67, and ten minutes is 0.17. The common ones almost never come out to a clean figure, which is why most systems round.

What does rounding to the quarter hour mean?

Time is snapped to the nearest 0.25 of an hour, so anything between 7 and 22 minutes past becomes 0.25. Employers use it to keep timesheets tidy; check which increment yours uses, because tenths of an hour and five minute increments are both common too.
