Some dates you want to watch approach. A launch, a holiday, an exam, a deadline that is either comfortably far away or much closer than you had assumed.
Set the date and it ticks. Days, hours, minutes and seconds, updating every second, in your own time zone so midnight means midnight where you are standing rather than somewhere on a server.
The same wait is also shown in weeks, days, hours and minutes, which is the version that tends to change how the deadline feels. Six weeks sounds fine. Twenty nine working days sounds like a plan is needed. Name the countdown and it will still be here next time you open the page.
How the countdown is worked out
The target is the date and time you set, read against your own device's clock. Every second the page subtracts the current moment from it and splits the difference into days, hours, minutes and seconds. The totals underneath show the same gap in whole weeks, hours and minutes.
Leave the time at 00:00 and the countdown runs to the very start of the day, which is what most people mean by counting down to a date.
A worked example
From 9:00 in the morning on Thursday 24 September 2026 to the start of Christmas Day, the calendar says 91 days and 15 hours, or 13 whole weeks.
Where the clocks go back in between, as they do in the UK on 25 October and in most of the US on 1 November, the countdown shows 91 days and 16 hours instead. It measures real elapsed time, and that night really is an hour longer.
Getting the target right
Pick the right end of the day. A deadline at the end of Friday is 23:59 on Friday, or 00:00 on Saturday, not 00:00 on Friday. Set the time field, or the countdown will finish a day early.
Remember whose midnight it is. A launch at midnight in New York is 5:00 in London and early afternoon in Tokyo, and a countdown on your device counts to your own midnight. Convert first with the time zone converter if the event happens somewhere else.
Count working days separately. A countdown shows calendar time. If the deadline is really about how many working days you have left, the business days calculator counts them for the same range.
A countdown makes the deadline real. It does not make the work smaller.
