What belongs on an electrician invoice
- Licence number
- Required on invoices in many states, and the first thing an insurer asks for after an incident.
- The call-out charge, separately
- A call-out covers turning up and is charged whether or not the fault is found. Burying it in the hourly rate makes a ten minute fix look extortionate.
- Certification reference
- Certified work has a document number, and the invoice is what the homeowner keeps. Putting the reference on it is how the two get reunited years later at a sale.
- Warranty on parts and on labour
- They differ. Parts carry the manufacturer's term, labour carries yours, and saying so on the invoice prevents the assumption that both are indefinite.
The mistake that costs electricians the most
Describing the work too vaguely to be useful later
An invoice reading 'electrical work' is worthless to a homeowner selling the property, to an insurer after a fire, and to the next electrician trying to understand what was done. Name the circuit, the location and the part fitted. It costs a sentence and it is the document that outlives the job.
Sales tax on an electrician invoice
Parts and labour are often treated differently, and in some states an electrician is treated as the consumer of the parts rather than a reseller of them. Your state's rules for contractors rather than for retailers are the ones that apply.
The template has a tax field with an editable label, so it will say VAT or GST if that is what you need, and it applies the rate to the subtotal after any discount. Leave the rate at zero if you are not registered to collect. Nothing here is tax advice, and a question about your own registration is one for your state's department of revenue or your accountant.

Questions about electrician invoices
Should an electrician charge a call-out fee?
Yes, and it should be its own line. A call-out pays for travel and for the diagnosis, both of which happen whether or not the fix is quick. Folding it into an hourly rate means a fifteen minute repair either looks absurdly expensive or is done at a loss.
Does the licence number have to be on the invoice?
In many states, yes, and the requirement usually sits with the state's licensing board rather than with tax law. Even where it is optional, customers paying for certified work look for it, and it is the number an insurer will ask for if anything goes wrong.
How long should an electrician warrant labour?
Twelve months is the common term and is what most customers expect. Parts are separate and carry whatever the manufacturer gives. Stating both on the invoice avoids the assumption that a two year part failure is a labour issue.
